What Does Freedom Mean to a Student?

An Independence Day That Belonged to the Children

From our youngest Newtons, Edisons and Bolts to our senior Kalams and Hamiltons, students took charge of the celebration while our wonderful Sparrow Heads and mentors quietly facilitated from the sidelines.

Children interpreted India's freedom struggle in their language.

They became freedom fighters. They enacted their own versions of India's heroes. They sang, laughed, improvised, questioned and celebrated.

And sometimes, freedom sounded beautifully unpredictable.

One moment we were singing “Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani” and the next, an impromptu boys' version of Sunny Deol's “Main Nikla Gaddi Leke” had everyone joining in.

Was it perfectly rehearsed? No.

Was it perfectly alive? Absolutely

Is it freedom from homework, class assignments, discipline and morning assemblies? Perhaps every child would happily vote for that version!

But at Golden Sparrow Open School, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, we believe freedom in education means something deeper: the freedom to think, speak, question, create and express yourself without being trapped inside a rehearsed script.

And this 15th August Independence Day celebration was exactly that.

There were no painfully long speeches, especially by the Principal! No children memorising paragraphs they barely understood. No perfectly rehearsed performances where every smile, salute and sentence had been practised twenty times.

Instead, we handed the day to the students.

Freedom From Rote Learning

For us, open schooling is not simply about changing textbooks, boards or classrooms. It is about changing the relationship a child has with learning.

A creative school should give children the confidence to have an opinion. A micro school should allow personalities to emerge rather than disappear inside a crowd. An alternative school should create experiences that students remember long after they forget the chapter number.

That is why our Independence Day was not merely an event about freedom. It was an experience of freedom.

Freedom from rote learning. Freedom from rehearsed speeches.

Freedom from constantly being told there is only one correct way to answer, perform, learn or succeed.

Where the Mind Is Without Fear

Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore imagined an India “where the mind is without fear.”

More than a century later, perhaps that remains one of the greatest goals of education. We do not need to build better cages for children and then proudly decorate those cages with technology, smartboards and new textbooks. We need to open them.

At Golden Sparrow Open School, our dream is simple:

Let children think freely.
Let them speak fearlessly.
Let them learn differently.
And most importantly, let the Sparrows fly.

Because perhaps the true meaning of Independence Day in a school is not teaching children what freedom was.

It is allowing them to experience what freedom can be.
